This session will present the STATE OF MIOSHA including 2023 accomplishments and successes, significant cases, strategic goals, emphasis programs, and special initiatives. Plans for 2024 will also be disclosed.

Effective safety and health management systems are proven to prevent occupational illnesses and injuries. Through Michigan’s Voluntary Protection Program (MVPP), management, labor, and MIOSHA establish cooperative relationships at workplaces that have implemented a comprehensive safety and health management system. MVPP requires active employee involvement, management commitment, continual identification and elimination of hazards, and robust health and safety training. The process to develop, implement, and apply for this prestigious recognition with MIOSHA will be presented to class participants.

Fall protection is complex. It is more than just telling workers the rules. It takes creativity and effort to find solutions to the real-world challenges. Some examples of challenges and solutions will be shared. The ideas and concepts are intended to spark new solutions to the fall protection challenges that Michigan companies face every day.

Industries operating within the Warehousing and Distribution North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) codes are quite varied in their scope of work and the hazards present within them. In response, Federal OSHA and MIOSHA have each instituted emphasis programs to focus enforcement and consultative resources to address these higher injury rates and specific industry hazards. This presentation will cover the emphasis programs, the types of industries covered, and the most common hazards found.

The complicated nature of the hazards present in the Cannabis Industry can be daunting. The purpose of this awareness presentation is to provide an overview of the safety and health hazards that may be present in the cultivation, processing, and sale of Cannabis.

This program has been an annual favorite at the conference with both safety and health violations being discussed. Three experienced CET consultants (health, general industry, and construction) will illustrate what enforcement and consultation employees are finding in the workplace that often lead to workplace injuries and illnesses. They will help unravel the mystery and explain the hazards behind the most cited 10 safety, 10 health, and 10 construction rules by MIOSHA in the past year. They will also offer tips and solutions to help employers and employees recognize and correct these hazards.
